Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity.  1 Timothy 4:12

A clean slate
What is it about the new year that makes one want to refresh their lives? Some strange chemical reaction takes place when we simultaneously combine staying up far too late, eating sour kraut, and watching some weird lighted sphere lower itself onto Times Square in the Big Apple. Suddenly we lift our chins up from studying the tracks we are standing in and as we gaze dumbfoundedly into the new year, we mutter under our breath, "how in the world did I get over here?" Well, that part is pretty simple. Where you are is a summary of the choices you've made in the past. Oh. Yeah, guess you can't blame the weather, your parents, your goldfish, your circumstances, anything. If you are going to truly own this thing called being a human being, then you must realize that you are the only thing in all creation gifted with true free choice. While this may cause the stiff glove of RESPONSIBILITY to slap me across the face, it also brings with it a powerful truth. I am also free to choose where I go from here. If I am willing to own my choices, then I am free to make better ones. So 2010 is my oyster! So how do we know if we're making the right choices? Good question... I can't go there right now because it's getting late and I gotta work in the morning and I wanna get back early so I have no choice but to....just kidding. I choose to get to that later.

...and you have the chalk!
Okay, so I get it. I make choices today that impact where I end up tomorrow. So how can I be sure I'm making the right choices today? That's kind of like trying to figure out which street to turn onto. You have to go back a question first and ask "where am I trying to go?" If you don't know where you are headed, it doesn't much matter where you turn! Just pick one and try to enjoy the ride. Of course, if you want to have a meaningful ride, feel free to choose a destination. Here's a good concept to remember: "if you aim at nothing, you will hit it with amazing accuracy." So where is your 2010 gonna be aimed at? If there was only one thing that you could accomplish this entire year, what would it be? Okay, now, what must you do in the next month to move that direction? Okay, now, what about this week? Okay, how does my choices today line up with that? See, sometimes we make our choices more confusing then they need to be, because we are trying to base them on changing feelings, circumstances, and opinions. If we have established clearly a destination, then we have a built in GPS to guide us on the turn-by-turn. Not nearly so confusing, huh? So set a destination! Make a physical list of your top 10 priorities and goals. Even if you never look at it again, the act of deciding and writing them down will begin to influence the choices you make. So get to it. Yes, you, sitting right there reading this! Pick up that pen laying nearby, grab a scrap of paper and start scratching. WAIT!!! You're gonna wanna ask Him to clear your head first...
